Seeds of Conflict

Although the treaty of Versailles had tremendous potential, its effort to build a long lasting peace failed; the peace was built on quicksand.  The ideas proposed in the treaty such as Wilson’s 14 points were good in theory, but not effective in practice, because the only point that was implemented was the formation of the League of Nations.  Every participant country in the war had a different definition of justice in his mind, because different countries underwent different struggles.  What could be viewed as just from the American viewpoint could’ve been viewed as the complete opposite from the French viewpoint.  France suffered greatly because of the war since most of the war had been fought on their soil, so they felt that Germany needed to be punished more severely.  The United States entered the war relatively late, and did not undergo what France did, as a result they didn’t feel as strongly as France did regarding the punishment of Germany.  As countries’ opinions differed, they had to come to a compromise.  Compromises do not always provide satisfaction, and this particular compromise left the victorious as well as the vanquished countries bitter; the countries were not satisfied and wanted more than what the treaty offered.

The seeds of conflict began to be sown even before the actual treaty as Russia and Germany were deliberately alienated from the treaty.  Germany and Russia were purposefully excluded from the treaty leading to the growth of the strong feeling of bitterness within these two countries.  Germany was excluded because it was seen as the country ‘responsible’ for the war, while Russia was excluded for its early withdrawal from the war and its current civil war.  Decisions were made concerning the fate of these two countries while both of them were not present.  Obviously the peace would be temporary if not all of the participating countries were present to decide on matters and come to compromises, especially on matters concerning their own country.  Russia alienated by the allies lost territory, while Finland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania (formerly part of Russia) became independent nations.  Russia suffered land loss and wasn’t even present when these decisions were made.  As for Germany, it suffered much more than land losses.  If these two countries were present in the treaty, it would have definitely been more effective.  All participating countries should’ve taken part in this treaty, not just the ‘winners’.  Russia and Germany did not have a say whatsoever in what was happening to them, and as a result were left embittered and unsatisfied with what they viewed as unjust decisions concerning them.

As for Germany, it was held completely responsible for the war, by having to sign the War Guilt Clause.  Germany undoubtedly played a big role in the war, but should have the sole responsibility of the war been put on its shoulders?  Germany not only had to claim sole responsibility for the war, but it had to pay for it as well both in the literal and metaphorical meanings.  Germany suffered a great deal of territorial losses, for example Alsace Lorraine was given back to France.  All of Germany’s colonies were stripped away from them becoming mandates.  This was a significant loss to the Germans, because a large fraction of their economy depended on resources gained from its colonies.  The creation of Poland and the Polish Corridor- an area that separated Germany from Russia aggravated many Germans, because their land was being reduced and new states were being formed.  Rhineland, an area between France and Germany, was occupied by the allies planting a seed of future conflict as well. The actual financial costs that were supposed to be paid by Germany were about 33 billion dollars over the course of thirty years.  Germany also suffered militarily, for its land force was reduced to 100,000 men, and it was not allowed to produce or import weapons, nor was it allowed to have U-boats or aircrafts.  Germany paid for the war through territorial losses, economic losses, military losses, and most importantly through the humiliation of signing the War Guilt Clause; the Germans were embittered.  Aware that they were going to pay for the war for the rest of their lives, the Germans grew hateful and bitter.

The territorial changed also contributed to the presence of future conflict.  Not only were Germany and Russia affected by the treaty, everyone was.  Austria-Hungary, a central power, suffered land losses, for several new counties were created from its empire such as Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia.  Czechoslovakia was composed of three types of peoples, the Germans, the Czechs, and the Slavs. This mixture of peoples obviously was going to lead to nationalistic movement, leading to future conflict.  As for the Ottoman Empire, it lost a lot of its empire, for its lands in South West Asia were carved into a mandate.  Palestine, Iraq, and Trans Jordan were under British control, while Lebanon and Syria were under French control.  This also led to nationalistic fervor and hatred in the hearts of the conquered peoples.  Britain’s control of Palestine eventually led to the development of the State of Israel, thus releasing a conflict still evident today.  As for Italy and Japan, they entered the war on the Allies’ side hoping to gain land, but they were left unsatisfied when they gained less than what they wanted.  Finally, the people in the mandates (formerly German colonies) were furious at the way in which the allies disregarded their desire for independence, thus also leading to nationalism and bitterness.

People were left embittered after the Treaty of Versailles; everyone felt cheated and betrayed.  This feeling of betrayal undoubtedly would lead to emerging conflicts between nations.  No country was satisfied, some countries were alienated, they suffered from territorial, economic, and military losses, they were mistreated, etc.  The decisions made in the Treaty of Versailles did not please the majority of people, leading to the growth of bitterness within countries.  Instead of building a long lasting peace, the Treaty of Versailles did the opposite by failing to satisfy the needs of the people.

What Tenderness Can Do

Introduction: Does an act of kindness ever go unrewarded? No it doesn’t. To hear the phrase “Thank you” is enough for some people. Tenderness can really change a person. Roger was a confused boy, who didn’t know right from wrong until he met Mrs. Jones. She gave him tenderness, love, and care; things he wasn’t used to. At first he wanted to leave Mrs. Jones, then he was reluctant about leaving, and finally he didn’t want to leave. Roger was a changed young man and he didn’t even know it.

At the beginning, all Roger wanted to do was take the easy way out.”No’m”, said the being dragged boy. ‘I just want you to turn me loose.Pg1”. This quote represents how all Roger wants to do is leave. He doesn’t want to face the consequences of his actions. Instead of Roger working for a pair of blue suede shoes, he tries to steal money to buy them from Mrs. Jones. That night, Roger chose to take the easy way out. He doesn’t want to go anywhere with Mrs. Jones. All Roger has in his life is trouble, and why should he add to that. He has no family, no love in his life, and he doesn’t want to add to all that misery. Going to jail will be the absolute worst for him, no one understands him. The mere thought of adding more emptiness to his life was frightening, and all he wanted to do was take off. At least his old life would be a better life than the one in jail. He thought stealing a purse would be the easiest thing in the world, easier than working, but to his surprise he could no longer run away from his actions. He was stuck with Mrs. Jones.

A change in Roger’s character develops; he starts liking to stay with Mrs. Jones. “Roger looked at the door-looked at the woman –looked at the door-and went to the sink. Pg 2. ” As you can tell by reading the excerpt, Roger starts to develop a change; he is starting to like it there. Sure, he is still scared of her, he doesn’t know her that well and is scared of what a strong woman like Mrs. Jones could do to him. He doesn’t know that he wants to stay consciously but deep down in his heart he likes the fact that someone is caring for him. He comes from a broken home, and when he tries to steal a woman’s purse, she takes him in. She doesn’t take him into punish him, or even to report him to the police, but to feed and wash him. That is the average response from a woman who has just been robbed. He is wondering,”Why is she so nice to me; I tried to steal her purse.” He probably didn’t eat a home cooked meal in a long time, and probably had no one to talk to. Out of the blue comes this truly unique individual who starts to talk about herself and her past life. No one is ever nice to him, and Roger won’t admit it, but he actually starts to like it there.

A final change in Roger’s character develops; he doesn’t want to leave such a warm and loving home.”The boy wanted to say something else other than ‘Thank you ma’aam’ to Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones, but he couldn’t do so as he turned at the barren stoop and looked at the large woman in the door.pg 3”.Roger doesn’t want to leave the only good thing that has happened to him in a long time. The environment in which Mrs. Jones lived in was such a warm environment, and he would be a fool to leave all that. But he didn’t, Mrs. Jones was the one eager for him to leave at the end. Isn’t it ironic, how at the beginning all Roger wants to do is leave, but Mrs. Jones is so eager to take him home with her? And at the end, when Roger wants to stay, she is eager for him to leave? He wanted to say something more to her, like: “How can I ever repay you?”,”Why are you doing all this?, and “Can I visit you again?”But she doesn’t want to start a relationship with him; she has taught him right from wrong and wanted him to succeed on his own. She shut the door just like that, and he had to face his empty life again. The life where he had no family, food Roger, etc. He had found something so good in that home, and that was Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones, the woman who touched him deeply; the woman he would never forget it.

Conclusion: Roger left Mrs. Jones’s porch leaving something behind. He left behind his past life.; a life with stealing, no love and no work. Mrs. Jones’s tenderness really did change Roger’s life. Maybe Roger doesn’t know that yet, but he will start acting differently in his life because of Mrs. Jones’s influence on him. No one what will happen to our dear friend Roger, but he will never go back to his past life, that is guaranteed.

Death Anniversary Day

I want to celebrate your life today,
Your death anniversary day,

With white lilies, and roses everywhere
And incense scent filling the air.

I will spend some time in your bedroom
And spray it with your favorite perfume,

Remembering the chats and laughs we had
Reliving memories; the happy and sad

I will view your things and recall
The stories behind them all

And listen to your music collection as well
Recalling the comments you used to tell.

I will gaze at your picture frame
Hear your beautiful voice calling my name

Telling me, “Five years have passed, Mother
Since fate separated us from each other

Your feelings are still very raw
You didn’t forget for a moment, I know.

You remember this day with great pain
Reminiscing the events again and again.

Recalling the worst day in your life
Is like stabbing your heart with a knife

The unexpected phone call and what followed
And the hard facts that you after swallowed,

The flashback of this traumatic event,
Your helplessness and inability to prevent,

Will haunt you as long as you live
As moments of that day you always relive.

Yet, despite your pain, you kept my legacy going
Honoring my name and keeping it glowing

Thank you Beloved Mother, for keeping me alive
God bless you, and help you continue to survive.”

Read it from cover to cover all in one go.

It is true what you said. I felt one with YOU. Tears streamed down my cheeks, cried, smiled, bit my lip and clenched my guts. True much of what you said is what I feel and like to say and shout aloud. Your voice of sorrow is my voice as well.

You said it very well without fear or a mask.

The Hero of the Play

The Heroine of this play is Juliet. Juliet is the one who had to make all the major decisions and truly act like a woman. Everything was so simple for Romeo, but Juliet was the one who had to make sacrifices. First of all, Juliet was strong enough to disobey her father by refusing to marry Paris. Some might say that she ended up obeying her father at the end, but that is because she didn’t want to sacrifice yet another precious thing in her life. Juliet was not the type of person to weep over what has passed, but she was a person who took action. She went to Friar Laureee and asked for advice, then made a decision that will for sure affect the rest of her life. She decided to fake her death and lay in the Capulet tomb for about 2 days; I don’t know how more courageous you can get than that. Finally, unlike Romeo who was a chicken and drank poison to kill himself, Juliet killed herself by plunging a dagger into her flesh and dying a painful death. No one would choose a painful death over a peaceful death; Juliet did. Juliet was willing to sacrifice anything to the one thing she believed in, love.

In my opinion, Romeo didn’t understand love, and wasn’t sacrificing enough for Juliet. Everything bad in this play happened because of Romeo. Romeo constantly ran away from his problems, but Juliet had to face them like a true lady. Some might say that Juliet was a woman and Romeo was a boy. Juliet is a truly amazing character, who I look up to because she teaches us never to give up.

Character Profile

At the age of 12, Darius went to Scribal School in the Sumerian City-State Ur. By the time he was 20 years old, he finished his scribal studies, and set back home to the Sumerian city-state Isin to become a scribe. Upon his return, he discovered that his parents as well as his brother have all died while he was away. He doesn’t know how they died, but he knows that they are enjoying their after lives. Now he is 30 years old, but doesn’t look a day over 20 years. He is quite successful, and is known for his very quick and neat writing abilities. He has dark brown hair and dark brown eyes. His olive skin doesn’t set him apart from other civilians. He wears a tiered kaunake, a linen calf length skirt. He also wears a shawl –like item that was worn by covering the left shoulder and wrapping in around the back, beneath the right arm, over the left shoulder, and once again beneath the right armpit. He wears leather sandals, and is quite handsome.

As I mentioned before, he lives in Isin, a newly conquered state by King Rim-Sin of Larsa. Isin is an urban city-state, and is very lively. Under Rim-Sin, scribal annals prospected, thus Darius becomes more successful than ever.

Darius is always interested in love, and often spends sleepless nights thinking about it. He is amazed by love and its effects, which he hears about from his friend, Ishtar. Ishtar is a scribe as well. Darius sees many beautiful women, but never feels the intoxicating effects of love. He is polytheistic, like other Sumerians. He isn’t particularly a religious man, and only visits the gods at the ziggurat when he needs something. He particularly favors the goddess of love, Inanna. For he thinks that she would give him success in finding love.

Darius is neither rich nor poor, but he is content with his life. He believes in an afterlife, but is determined to love in both lives. Darius is one of the few Sumerians who doesn’t enjoy drinking beer. He doesn’t trust anything that already exists on Earth. That says a lot about his character, it shows that he is insecure and has trust issues. Darius’s diet consists mainly of fish. On special occasions he has some poultry, lambs and pigs. He eats a lot of fruits and vegetables, and grapes are his favorite fruit. Darius lives for one thing and one thing only, to find love.

Why?

Some years have passed
and you still cry!
You’re not the only mother,
whose daughter
did prematurely die.
Hide your tears for the sake
of your loved ones,
at the very least, try.
Why are you silent?
You don’t have a reply?

“What should I say?
words can’t easily fly.
If you knew
how losing a child feels,
you won’t ask why.
It’s the most painful loss,
no one can deny.
You want me to pretend
to be happy, perform and lie,
wrap up my feelings
and strap them with a tie,
when my silent cries
reach as far as the sky.
Sorrow is something
I didn’t ask for, nor buy.
It just came to me.
Do you still want to ask
why I still cry?”

Extract from a book

"It’s ironic. I see people who are living who walk through life feeling dead inside, just passing time until they die. Then there are those who have died who want to stay with the living and have never felt more alive. There are people who had a chemical imbalance in life who, now dead, want to join the living because they see how beautiful life can be. There are also souls who just had such a great life that they still want to share it with their loved ones. And there are people who died too soon who choose to remain with the living who are the same age so they can live through their experiences. There are people who fought to live an extra day, or to see one last sunset, and they fight for these things out of love of life. Life is meant to inspire us to take a chance, to reach down into the very core of who we are and bring that to the surface to share."

Mother, don't be sad
having lost a friend or two

Do remember,
you’ve gained a few.

All your friends love you,

Few can’t cope with your grief,
Nor know what to say and do.

Don’t forget, Mother
I am your friend too

I’m always with you
Alive in you, isn't it true?

Traditional Vocabulary

Hey Lama, thanks for volunteering to put the vocab up together. Umm, I’m using the sentence in the context that the dad is telling his son that he shouldn’t marry for love. The dad loved before and didn’t marry his love for something his dad told him. Feel free to change it if you want, and I can make changes itha tabeen.

1. Dad speaking, “In this day and age, it is a common supposition that love comes before marriage, but it is best when love comes after marriage.”

2. Son speaking, “Why father? You speak of love as if it is something destructive. From my experience, a modicum of love can make you forget everything including your troubles, the extreme state of penury you’re in, and the tears falling down your cheeks. Love resuscitates you after life has killed you.”

3. Dad, “Love does make you forget your troubles, and that is exactly the problem. When you fall in love, you can view a slovenly dressed person as extremely attractive. You fall in love with someone you make up in your head and you end up marrying someone who doesn’t exist. I don’t want that for you my child, if love comes after marriage then it will be true love.”

4. Son, “Father I refuse to believe that.”

5. Father, “My son, you are still a novice in life, take it from someone who’s wrinkles represent a life of regret and bad choices. When I was about your age, I fell in love. She was so beautiful, a true goddess. Upon first sight, I knew that she was the woman I dreamt about all my life, I knew she was the one who would capture my heart. She showed interest in me as well, and before I knew it we were lovers. As you know my father was the chief of the tribe, and as his successor, I knew all the tribe’s secrets. I expressed to her my love and how I wished to make her my wife, after that, we began to meet frequently. After we would make love, I would be torpid and tired. She knew this and used this time to ask me about the tribe’s secrets. The fool I was, I would spill everything to her. I told her where my father liked to hide away, where the tribe’s wealth was hidden. I wish I told her these secrets in a succinct manner, but I believe I told her everything in extreme detail. One day, as I was coming home to see my father, I saw her on top of him putting a dagger through his chest. I felt as if that dagger penetrated through my chest. I ran to her and pushed my fingers against her throat asking her why she did this, she finally confessed that she was from a rival tribe. Within seconds I killed her with the hands that used to caress her body. For weeks after that, I was left feeling nebulous trying to differentiate what was fact from fiction. I became chief of the tribe, and married your mother, who I learned to love over time. To recaptitulate, love blinds you my child, so be careful. Let me choose your wife for you, or you shall inherit my wrinkles of regret.”

• The selfish sadist who does not seem to care about anything or anyone. He has lost his faith due to a traumatizing incident that happened to him when he was younger. He openly desecrates anything that has religious value to others, because he finds it stupid for people to believe in such things.

• The lazy student who barely comes to class, copies down the main ideas of the lesson from others, and pays no attention to inconsequential details.

• The mad, balding scientist wearing glasses with huge frames, who lives an extremely isolated antisocial lifestyle. Dies old and alone when he is in his mid fifties due to a poisonous concoction that was accidentally slipped into his drink by his pet monkey.

• The old lady who lives alone with her 10 pet cats in an isolated house too big for one person known as the ‘haunted house’. She lays all day in front of the television talking to her cats as she awaits her ‘stories’ to come on. Her cadaverous appearance supports her feeling of feeling dead inside.

• The beneficent successful man who reached his newly found status of wealth by working his way up. He constantly gives back to the poorer members of society, because he understands what they are going through.

• The austere mother who has driven her children away from her as a result of her strict conduct. She is not emotionally attached to her children as a result of her discontent in her marriage to a man 25 years her senior.

Your sister is here

Oh! Dear Daughter,
Your sister is here.

See her name on that building,
 Large and clear

It’s her message telling us
That she is so near.

Ever since, we got on the boat
Her voice has been ringing in my ear,

I feel her hand on my shoulder,
She must be with us here

Through my eyes she is seeing
Paris’s glamour and cheer

A city she would have loved to visit
Had fate allowed her at least a year

I surely feel her presence
That is why I am shedding a tear.

Warmth is creeping into my heart
As I feel her- a feeling I endear

Do not think I am hallucinating,
Nor have any fear

That I lost my mind
Daughter, dear,

But believe in me, and that it is
Your sister’s voice I hear!

Samar Al Ansari's 2011 Award for Analytical and Critical Thinking in Economics,IKNS

In a story Samar Al Ansari wrote, she said: “Darius died a happy man because he died knowing that he was loved.” (March 19th 2003). Samar’s words echo back to her as she has left us knowingly.

Samar was indeed a loved person; she was kind-hearted, helpful and very gracious. Many of you here might not know Samar Alansari; Samar was part of the IKNS community from KG1 until her graduation in 2006. She was a very well rounded figure who excelled in her academics and managed to be a vital member in sports teams.

In her memory, and tribute to her outstanding efforts, her parents have established annual prizes to graduating students who excelled in the two subjects Samar showed most passion for, Economics and Physical Education. In Economics, Samar was outstanding; she viewed economical theories in different perspectives. She questioned everything and induced critical and analytical thinking into her work and that predominantly made her a distinguished student.

As a tribute to Samar, who was a member of the Honor Society, and to honor her memory, the Economics prize is awarded each year to a student who excels in the following criteria:

Criterion 1: Application and analysis of Economic concepts and theories
Criterion 2: Evaluation and assessment of the student’s ability to evaluate economic concepts and theories in the context of real-world examples

In 2007, the first to receive Samar Al Ansari Economics award was Subah BuAli, In 2008, it was presented to Tariq Noor, in 2009 to Nouf Mattar and in 2010 to Abdulla Mahmood. This year the Samar Al Ansari Economics Award is presented to a student who has clear writing and critical thinking skills as well as analytical abilities, which has made her the most eligible candidate among 21 students taking economics in 2010-2011.

I have the pleasure to invite Dr. Randah Hamadeh, Samar’s mother, to present the Samar Al Ansari’s Award in Economics to Muzoon Mattar.

Looking Up

I looked up from my sorrow,

Wiped tears aside and found

The day was new, the sun shone on

The world would still go round.

“How can this be?” I screamed and cried,

I’m sure to fly apart!

The center of my world is gone,

A stave goes through my heart!

I’ve got to learn survival, I reasoned

Through the pain.

My loved ones need me to go on

To share their lives again.

To laugh once more and plan ahead

For living, future times.

I had to think of someway I

Could WANT to start that climb.

And too, among the things HE loved

In me lest I forget,

My humor, spark, my drive and strength

When troubling times beset.

I looked up ‘cross that table there

And into eyes that cried,

So pained (like mine), so deep in grief…

Your loved one’s too had died.

And in the midst of so much hurt,

My heart felt such concern

For each and every heartache there,

We’ve all so much to learn.

And I listened, shared and wept

Together with you all,

A tiny light was lighted and

Some weight began to fall.

None of us is healed or whole,

We’ve not emerged brand new.

But we’re surely somewhat stronger now

In what we seek to do.

My friends, I’ve gathered strength from fears

I saw there in your eyes.

In quiet ways we’ve learned to help

Each other realize.

That looking up through veils of tears

We still can vaguely see

And help some other friend “look up”

THANK YOU for helping me.

I Feel You

You left a scent

on your bed sheet,

and a shadow to

occupy your seat,

to always welcome me

and greet.

But most of all,

you left me love

with each heart beat.

No one feels your presence

more than me-

Is this how

It’s supposed to be?

That only I

can feel and see,

When others fear

to remember thee.

You are with me

the moment I open my eye

When I start my day

and gaze at the sky

Wishing that

I was the one to die.

You were so young

to say goodbye.

Life goes on as usual

for everyone.

Not for me,

nothing is normal

since you’ve been gone.

I wish, from my present,

I could escape and run,

And go back

to when you were with us,

my dearest one.

People keep telling me

that I’m wrong

because I keep singing

your song.

They claim I’m dragging

my grief too long

by keeping you

in my present, where

you no more belong.
