Crossroads

In this vaudeville, the author clearly exhibits his views on life. His message to the readers is, you see the clearest when your eyes are shut. He emphasizes the importance of trusting your instinct and going by what you feel, and not by what you see. Your eyes can not see inner beauty, but your heart can. The man in “crossroads” had his eyes wide open, but he couldn’t see his true love that was standing right in front of him. In response to the man’s disability, the woman told him to close his eyes, because she knew that his eyes were blinding him from the truth. The author is trying to show that it isn’t correct to only believe what you see. People hold on to false ideals and by doing this they are depriving themselves of happiness. For example, the man was looking for the perfect woman, the beautiful woman in the picture. As for the woman, she too was looking for the perfect man, that’s why she went from man to man. They both had such high standards, and didn’t want to settle for anything less than perfect, even if it meant depriving themselves of happiness. As for the flagman, he is a foil to them to emphasize their idealism.
