Reading Log #2 For Novel

Title: That Was Then,This is Now
Author: S.E. Hinton
Date Started: 29/10/2000, Date Finished : 29/11/2000
Category of Novel: Teenage Problem  (Fiction)
Characters:
Bryon: Bryon is a tall sixteen-year old who has black hair, and he's a bit tanned. The characters in the novel like Bryon a lot, because he is nice and caring. The people who are especially fond of him are his girlfriend Cathy, his bestfriend Mark, and M&M, Cathy's brother. At the end of the novel, Mark shows some hostility towards Bryon, because of some problems they are having. Bryon responds to conflicts of the story well. He understands them and tries to fix them, but he makes them even larger while doing that. Bryon likes the people around him, especially Cathy, Mark, and M&M. Bryon though, feels a gulf between himself and Mark because things are no longer the same between them.
Mark: Mark  is a thin handsome sixteen-year-old with blond hair, white skin, and a special grin always on his face. People like Mark because he is a good kid, but some dislike him, because he is a troublemaker. Bryon ofcourse likes him a lot, so does
M&M. Cathy though dislikes Mark, because he is a troublemaker and she wants Bryon all to herself. Mark reponds to the conflicts of this novel not very well. He approaches them, but then ignores them. He tries to hint them to  Bryon, but he is not being very straightford. Mark likes most people and treats them well, but he dislikes Cathy as much as she dislikes him. He dislikes her because he feels that she is taking Bryon away from him. Mark also feels a gulf between Bryon and himself, but they are both not confronting each other.
Setting: The  setting of this story is in a poor neighborhood in a city in the U.S.A. in the present time.
Plot Summary: Mark and Bryon are bestfriends who always stay with a boy called M&M, Bryon starts going out with M&M's sister and he likes her a lot. They go to a dance one time and Bryon's ex-girlfriend paid a man to beat up a boy she liked, because he didn't like her back. Instead, he beat up Mark. Mark was hurt very badly, but he survived. Not a long time after Mark was beat up; M&M ran away from home, since then things have never been the same. Mark and Bryon go to a bar that their friend Charlie owns all the time. One day they were at the bar playing pool with some Texans and Mark and Bryon won all the games; they practically bankrupt the Texans. The Texans wanted to kill them by shooting them, but Charlie came in the perfect time and saved them. Although Charlie saved them, he didn't save himself; Charlie died! Bryon was beaten up by his ex-girlfriend's brothers, because Mark got her drunk and cut her long beautiful hair off. It was unfair for them to do that, but they thought Bryon did it. Bryon was hurt very badly, but he too survived. When Bryon was well again they searched for M&M and they found him. The problem was M&M lost his mind. To make things even worse for Bryon; Bryon found a jar of drugs under Mark's bed. Will Bryon put his life back together, or will he leave it as it is?
Content: I enjoyed this novel very much, because I felt the way Bryon felt and that really touched me. This novel was straight forward, and never boring. It was exciting right from the start. Before I read this magnificient novel, I thought all boys were tough, but the author explained to us that boys feel and cry like girls. A major theme of this novel was that was then, this is now. It is presented when Bryon changes and starts dating Cathy, and Mark wants it to be like the old days when Bryon and himself spent every second of every day together. Another major theme is friendship is golden, and no one should ever let go of it. It is presented when Mark and  Bryon feel a guilt between one another and none of themare doing much about it; though Mark wsa hinting that they were risking their friendship. The setting is very real and appropriate for this novel, because there are many gangs in that neighborhood they're in and that is the main part of the story. The charcters are real. I know this sounds strange, but when I read the novel, I felt a connection with all of the characters. They were very convincing , because I could tell what they were thinking by their actions. The language is appropriate for this novel, because they are teenagers, but for adults it wouldn't be appropriate. They speak a lot of slang, and that suits teenagers more. This novel doesn't remind me of any novels, because it is unique and one of a kind. It is the type of book that you just can't put down, and youcan't find these books anymore. I would definitely recommend this book to other people, because I will be doing them a favor by letting them read this magnificient book. I would like to read more books by this author, because she talks about teenage problems with such experience. I also want to read more books by this author, because I want to know what to do if I ever stumble over these problems. The novel was too short because it left me in suspense thinking about Bryon, but that's better because I can imagine and think about things that coul've happened to them.

Reading Log #1 For Novel

Author: Diana G. Gallagher
Date Started: 16/9/2000, Date Finished : 30/9/2000
Category of Novel: Other Fiction
Characteristics:
Sabrina: Sabrina is a teenage witch who lives with her aunts. She has blond hair and white skin. Her friends are Jenny and Harvey, and everbody thinks Sabrina is nice and sweet, but frankly they think she is a bit weird. Sabrina likes most of the people in the novel, but she doesn,t like Libby, the mean cheerleader and her cousin Tanya, because they act very mean to her and they do bad stuff to her. Sabrina tried to be friends with them, but it didn't work out because of their cold heartedness. Sabrina handles the conflicts in this story rather well, and did a very good job keeping things in order, and that is because she tried and tried till she succeeded, and that was very mature and smart of her.
Tanya: Tanya is Sabrina's cousin who is a witch also. She is also blonde and white skinned, and as Sabrina described her very beautiful. Not many people like this cold- hearted witch, because she is a rather mean person and casts evil spell on them. Tanya doesn't like Sabrina and her friends, because they are mortal (not witches) and Sabrina is half-mortal, but she likes Libby because she is also mean. Tanya doesn't handle the conflicts well at all, because she thinks Sabrina is dumb and doesn't know any spells, so she will win. That reminds me of the story of the 'Tortoise and the Hare'.
Setting: This story takes place in modern times, in a mall in the USA, and sometimes in Sabrina's house and rarely in the school.
Plot Summary: Sabrina and her class have assignments for the weekend to work in a store at the mall. Sabrina got to work in the shop that she wanted to work in, and in the job that Libby wanted to get, but didn't. In Sabrina's job interview, she was stuttering a lot, and almost cost her her job. At the store she worked in, she saw a very pretty girl staring at her. At home in her aubts' house, she saw the same girl, who turned out to be her cousin as well as a witch who caused the stuttering spell on Sabrina. Ever since then, Tanya has been causing Sabrina and her friends trouble. Sabrina then finally comes up with a way to avoid Tanya's spells. Will Sabrina succeed, or will she not?
Content: I really enjoyed reading this novel because it was entertaining as well as educational. Every time I'd turn a page, I'd get even more excited. This novel touched me so much that every time Sabrina was sad, I wassad and every time
Sabrina was happy, I was happy. Some of the major themes of this novel are to keep trying even f you fail, and to act nice to people even if they aren't nice to you. These themes were presented to me when Tanya casts a spell on Sabrina, but Sabrina was still nice to her, and when Sabrina thought of a way to avoid Tanya's spells and she kept on trying and trying. The characters of this novel are funny and entertaining, but not very real, because most of them are witches. The characters were very convincing, because you can tell how happy or sad they were from picturing them in your mind. The setting, which was the mall and Sabrina's house is an exciting place to be in by using your imagination. The language of this novel is appropriate, but not that appropriate because a teenager is talkning. This particular novel reminds me of many novels such as: Sister Sister, and Little Sister. I would definitely recommend this novel to people, because I had a lot of fun reading it and I think others will too. I would read more novels by this author because the ways she describes the characters and how they are feeling is phenmenal. The novel in my opinion was just right because the novel didn't keep going on and on, or was too short that it leaves people in suspense.

Candle Lighting

Around the globe candles are lit today
As parents remember their children and pray

I lit you a candle and called your name
I saw your face as I gazed at the flame

Smiling at me, sending me love
And greeting me from heaven above.

Remembering you today and everyday
Is what helps me survive my dismay.

But today is special as I with other parents bond
Call your name, wishing you could respond

Together we light candles honoring you
With tears falling from our eyes anew

Looking back at the times when you were there
Unlike the ones that we have now to bear

So with the flames of our candles, we unite
Togetherness helps us endure our plight

And by honoring you together, we feel good
As many around the globe for you stood.

A beautiful poem

I thought that time would stop if you had died
That sun and moon and stars would disappear
The earth itself might vanish into darkness
If I had lost a life I held so dear
But though you're gone the sun still heralds the day
And darkness only brings a brief respite
The world goes on, and those who never knew you
Just cannot know the grief that's in my heart.

Yet even in that grief I keep the gladness
That comes from having loved you and been loved
And even in my anguish and my sorrow
Somehow your presence seems to ease my aching heart.
I see your smile and still share in your laughter
I talk to you and feel that you are near
I know that somehow you can still be with me
To help me bear the grief that's ever here.
I so believe that love can live forever
That happiness of memory conquers pain
And although the world seems empty now without you
I know that sometime we will meet again.
