If Tears Could Build A Stairway

If tears could build a stairway,
and memories a lane.
I would walk right up to Heaven
and bring you back again.

No farewell words were spoken,
No time to say "Goodbye".
You were gone before I knew it,
and only God knows why.

My heart still aches with sadness,
and secret tears still flow.
What it meant to love you -
No one can ever know.

But now I know you want me
to mourn for you no more;
To remember all the happy times
life still has much in store.

Since you'll never be forgotten,
I pledge to you today~
A hollowed place within my heart
is where you'll always stay.

Surprised by Joy

Surprised by joy-inpatient as the wind
I turned to share the transport-Oh!with whom
But Thee, deep buried in the silent tomb,
That spot which no vicissitude can find?
Love, faithful love, recalled thee to mind-
But how could I forget thee? Through what power,
Even for the least division of an hour,
Have I been so beguiled as to be blind
To my most grievous loss?-That thought's return
Was the worst pang that sorrow ever bore
Save one, one only, when I stood forlorn,
Knowing my heart's best treasure was no more;
That neither present time, nor years unborn,
Could to my sight that heavenly face restore.

Our Broken Chain (Broken Chain, Revised by Author)

We little knew that day
God would call your name.
In life we loved you dearly.
In death we do the same.

It broke our hearts to lose you
But you didn't go alone,
for a part of us went with you
the day God called you home.

We're left with loving memories
of the time we had with you,
and feel your love around us
in everything we do.

Our family chain is broken
and our lives are not the same,
But as God calls us one by one
the chain will link again.

Six Painful Years

Six painful years have passed and I am still alive
Who would have thought that a day I will survive?

It is because you live in my heart,
Never left me, not for a minute did we part.

Six years dear daughter, since I saw your face,
Touched you, and had our last embrace.

These painful years, the worst in my life
As grief ripped my heart with a knife.

I was able through these years to endure
The most painful ache that has no cure.

I learnt to live with my suffering and pain,
That constantly occupy my heart and brain.

And honor your memory as I did for you,
Keeping you alive and your legacy too.

Samar Al Ansari-Posted on When Every Day Matters

Samar Al Ansari (Daughter), Randah Hamadeh (Mother)
Samar had a special bond with number 4 as she was born on the 4th day of the 4th month of the year. She loved this number so much that she picked 404 as her nickname.  Little did she know that she will pass away on the 4th day of September 2006. Samar graduated from high school on 14 June 2006 at the age of 18 years with high distinction and attained a 41 score out of 45 in the International Baccalaureate. At school, she excelled in her academic studies, soccer, musicals and all other activities she participated in. She was a perfectionist, ambitious and well rounded. Samar’s peers and teachers admired her for her academic excellence, social interaction and personality. Samar was kind and helpful to all her schoolmates and teachers and paid special attention to new students. She took it on herself to familiarize them with the school, befriend them and help them feel welcomed in the new environment. Samar’s friends, had their special place in her heart. She enjoyed being with them, sharing their joys and sadness. She generously offered her friends any assistance she could give and went out of her way for them. Samar was the friend to turn to when one of them  was in need since she was a good listener and gave sound advise. She had a unique relationship with each of her friends and shared special moments that are now cherished memories for each one of them. Samar loved her immediate and extended family and although she was not very vocal about her feelings, her behavior said it all. She was caring and lovable and admired by everyone. Loved by all, Samar and had special relations with her siblings, maternal grandparents and cousins. Although Samar was very modern, up to date with the latest western songs, soap operas and films, she was proud of her traditions as well. She was proud of her identity as an Arab and practicing Muslim. Samar observed daily prayers and the fasted the holy month of Ramadan. She really looked forward to Ramadan’s arrival every year. Since she was little, she was a kind, loving and compassionate person. She always knew what she wanted in life and was not hesitant in make her own decisions. Having had a very strong and determined personality with a tender heart, she was conscientious, always  aiming for perfection in everything she did. At her young age, Samar planned her future. She was supposed to start her higher education at the University of York, United Kingdom and, on graduation with an Economics degree, have her office at the Financial Harbour in Manama, Bahrain. Her dreams also included having her own Café bookstore, which she wanted my help to run. As for marriage, she also decided that she would have three kids, two boys and a girl. She went as far as naming them and deciding which school they would attend. That car accident took her life before she could fulfill her dreams and mine.

Closure

Love goes on after a loved one dies
Since only the body in the grave lies.

The bond of love continues on and on…
It is felt in your heart after the beloved is gone.

So never tell the bereaved, “have closure” after loss
Forget this word and from your vocabulary cross.

Closure is used in deals and for bank accounts
But, love can’t be closed or measured in amounts.

Love goes on and has no door,
To lock and choose not to open anymore.

And if it is a mother who lost a child like me,
Don’t expect her to have a door with a magic key.

For love never dies with one’s own child,
A fact to which some are unfortunately blind.

Accept that love goes beyond a child’s death,
Felt by a mother as she takes each breath.

So please don’ t ask her to have closure and forget,
This will be the worst advice she can ever get.

Vocabulary Assignment, "Stereotype List"

  • The selfish sadist who does not seem to care about anything or anyone.  He has lost his faith due to a traumatizing incident that happened to him when he was younger.  He openly desecrates anything that has religious value to others, because he finds it stupid for people to believe in such things.

  • The lazy student who barely comes to class, copies down the main ideas of the lesson from others, and pays no attention to inconsequential details.

  • The mad, balding scientist wearing glasses with huge frames, who lives an extremely isolated antisocial lifestyle.  Dies old and alone when he is in his mid fifties due to a poisonous concoction that was  accidentally slipped into his drink by his pet monkey.

  • The old lady who lives alone with her 10 pet cats in an isolated house too big for one person known as the ‘haunted house’.  She lays all day in front of the television talking to her cats as she awaits her ‘stories’ to come on.  Her cadaverous appearance supports her feeling of feeling dead inside.

  • The beneficent successful man who reached his newly found status of wealth by working his way up.  He constantly gives back to the poorer members of society, because he understands what they are going through.

  • The austere mother who has driven her children away from her as a result of her strict conduct.  She is not emotionally attached to her children as a result of her discontent in her marriage to a man 25 years her senior.

  • The juvenile delinquent who commits infractions such as pillage frequently hoping to get a bit of attention from his alcoholic, depressed mother.

  • The redoubtable revolutionary that is loved by many for his strength, vision, and ability.

  • The vulnerable girl in her teens who was impregnated by someone who fooled her into thinking he was in love with her.

  • The short man suffering from the Napoleon Syndrome who prates constantly about his ‘accomplishments’ in order to get some respect.

  • The punctilious housewife who suffers from obsessive compulsive disorder.  She irons her husbands shirts three times, because anything other than that will just not do.

  • The stalwart repressed young man, who stood bravely in front of his repressors fighting for his peoples’ rights.

Thank You

Thank you,
 for telling me
what I yearn to hear
Stories,
 about my daughter,
my most dear.

Seeing you,
 makes me feel
her near.
I feel your love,
apparent and
in your eyes, clear.

Thank you,
 for being
 sincere,
and for your visits
despite your discomfort
when I shed a tear.
