The setting of Habibi affects the way Liyana acts, but when she doesn’t like some aspects of the culture she acts as an individual. At the beginning of the story, when Liyana was packing to travel to Palestine, she wanted to take her “short” shorts with her. Her father didn’t allow it, and the setting and culture of Palestine forced her to change the way she dresses. Also, because of Palestine being an Arab speaking country, Liyana started learning Arabic. If she didn’t learn some Arabic,it would’ve been hard for her to live there. Finally, Liyana became friends with a Jewish boy, which was against her culture. She didn’t like that unwritten rule so she acted as she would have been in the US. As a result of that she kissed him and developed romantic feelings towards him.
