Samar Al Ansari Award for Girls Soccer

Athletic Awards

Samar Al Ansari Award for Girls Soccer

School year 2015/2016

In the Athletics Awards Night every year, IKNS celebrates an outstanding female Athlete by awarding her the ‘Samar Al Ansari Award for Girls Soccer’.

The eligible student for this award exhibits excellent sportsmanship combined with a commitment to IKNS sports and a high standard of skill in soccer.

Samar Al Ansari was an IKNS student who exhibited these traits.  She enjoyed many sports, yet she excelled in soccer.  She enjoyed a high sense of fairness, self-control and respect for her team, coaches and opponents.

Today, we celebrate these fine traits of sportsmanship, and encourage young IKNS athletes to endorse them as well.  Playing a sport is not only about winning and losing.  It is also about discipline, perseverance and courage.  This is what the Samar Al Ansari Award symbolizes, and this is what IKNS Athletes aspire to.

This is the tenth Samar Al Ansari Award that Samar’s family dedicate in good memory of their daughter to the female student who best demonstrates the above traits.

The tenth Samar Al Ansari Award for Girls Soccer goes to ….

Ms. Liana Al Natour, Grade 12

Samar Al Ansari Award for Analytical and Critical Thinking in Economics

Honor Society Ceremony
School Year 2015-2016
Samar Al Ansari Award for Analytical and Critical Thinking in Economics
Sunday, 5 June 2016

Dear Parents, Teachers, Students and distinguished guests, good morning.

Never have I felt more honored than when I was asked to write this speech about Samar Al Ansari Award in Economics.

At first I wasn’t so sure what I should include because I didn’t know much about Samar.  But after coming across a website her mother has kept running for the past 10 years and reading almost all of her stories and the poems written about her, I felt as though I knew Samar, as though she was one of my dearest friends. I also came across this quote that I felt was very significant, “Words are one of the most effective mediums of expression,” Samar wrote this in an essay when she was in the 11th grade and I couldn’t agree more.

As a role model, Samar inspires us to be unique and to be passionate about our interests.  Each of us has a unique contribution to make to the IKNS community and we should set our minds to achieve it.  Samar took a particular interest in Football and Economics and excelled in both of them. Critically and carefully she overcame any obstacle in her way.

Samar was also known for her kind-heartedness.  She inspires us to be humble, considerate and thoughtful. With these qualities, a good academic background can flourish and be put to good use.

In loving memory of Samar’s ambition, Samar’s family, in association with the school, has designed an Economics Award given to a Grade 12 student who excels in the subject.

The winner of this Award, Samar Al Ansari Award for Analytical and Critical Thinking in Economics, is someone who can think outside the box and can critically apply the Economics theories to real life situations and evaluate their applications.  He or she is able to transfer the knowledge gained from the textbooks to concrete situations in the news, and can assess how well the models fit the reality and where they fall short; life-long skills that will pave the way to success at university and beyond.

We would like to kindly ask Professor Randah Hamadeh, Mother of Samar Al Ansari, to present the award to its tenth recipient.

The winner of the tenth ‘Samar Al Ansari Award for Analytical and Critical Thinking in Economics is Noor Albosta

Ten Years Without You

It's your tenth birthday
That you missed.
We have been there
For each birthday.
Felt your mother’s longing
And affection displayed
With different flowers
Each year, roses, irises,
Orchids and other flowers
Enjoying the rest of their
Lives nurtured in vases
Around the assembly of
Framed photos that shine
In your precious corner
As a reminder that you
Remain with us.
Four-Four are not numbers
But symbols that show up
Not randomly, to alert us that
You are surrounding us.
Last time we saw you
Was on Labor Day,
Adding another Four
Not a coincidence to have
Labor and Four that year
Again another symbol for
The labor of your mother’s love
Carrying you for nine months
Flying in the eighth to Oxford to
Pass her doctorate thesis defense with
Only you witnessed her determination..
Her labor has not stopped
Nor her generosity to share
With us her love for you.

A poem sent by a friend

Oh bright and shining star! Where are you tonight?
You went away and darkness fell upon me.
You went away and a chill touched my being.
Oh bright and shining star! Where are you tonight?
You teased me with wondrous glow.
Now, you are not here and only remnants of your presence remain.
Oh bright and shining star! Where are you tonight?
I long to feel the warmth of your kiss upon my cheek.
I miss the tender caress of your rays.
Oh bright and shining star! Where are you tonight?
With you, my days are too short.
Without you, my nights are too long.
Oh bright and shining star! Where are you tonight?
Only you can take away the dark clouds.
Only you can bring that elusive 'pot-of-gold'.
Oh bright and shining star!
My provider of life......my inspiration.......please come back to me.
I will never let you go......
                                   ........again.
